A new study has revealed that crime rates in Glasgow are falling faster than rates seen in the rest of the country.
The news comes despite Scotland’s crime level being at a 41 year low according to the latest Police Scotland. The official statistics from Scotland’s largest city shows that crime in 2014-15 was down 6% from previous years with a 37% decrease in crime from the last decade.
Crime in Glasgow
Although Glasgow has 11% of the population of Scotland, it still accounts for 19% of the overall crime statistics in Scotland with 796 crimes for every 10,000 people. This was more than other areas of Scotland with 726 in Edinburgh, 608 in Aberdeen and just 145 in Orkney. The figures also reported a large increase in the number of sex crimes, however, many believe this is due to a campaign encouraging those to come forward. Despite this the police and still seeing the decrease largely as a positive step with violent crimes across Scotland having more than halved in the last ten years,
Chief Superintendent Andy Bates, Local Policing Commander of Greater Glasgow said: "I am encouraged that Glasgow has seen further significant reductions in crime over the 2014/15 period.
"Violent crime is at an all-time low in Glasgow but we are not complacent, and the police officers and staff of Greater Glasgow Division will continue to work tirelessly to ensure Glasgow remains a safe place to work, live and visit."
