Domestic Abuse Figures Increase Over Christmas and New Year

A recent investigation by Police Scotland Fife Division's Domestic Abuse Unit (DAIU) has led to the arrest and conviction of a 30-year-old man for a series of domestic offences

Earlier this month he appeared at the High Court in Glasgow where he was found guilty of two rapes and a sexual assault. The abuse apparently took place in Kirkcaldy, Alloa, Tillicoultry and Stirling.

"Tackling domestic crime in all its forms remains one of Police Scotland's top priorities and whenever these offences are brought to our attention we will conduct a thorough investigation to bring perpetrators to justice,” commented Detective Inspector Jim Leeson from Fife's DAIU.

Police Scotland recently published details of reported domestic abuse incidents over Christmas and New Year. Although there was a rise in the number of these incidents over the festive period, as is usually seen at that time of year, this year’s increase apparently wasn’t as large as previous years.

“Reports of domestic abuse over the Christmas and New Year period reduced by 6.1% which equates to over 300 fewer calls to police,” said Assistant Chief Constable Gillian MacDonald, Crime and Protection, Police Scotland. “On New Year’s Day alone, traditionally a day of the most heightened risk, the number of incidents reported reduced from 393 on 1st January 2017 to 366 on 1st January 2018. This means that there were nearly 30 fewer calls on that one day reporting incidents of violence and abuse to the police.”
