Police To Tackle Cyber Crime

Police Scotland are to invest £1.5 million in a new unit and a new hub to tackle cyber crime and internet crime.

The hub will be home to specialist investigators who will carry out forensic digital examinations of hardware in support of police investigations. While the group will monitor general online crime, they will focus on organised crime and child sexual exploitation groups.

Growth in Tackling Cyber Crime

The investment by Police Scotland will aid in the prevention of criminal activity and responds to the demand for digital forensic services. It is hoped that the unit will aid in investigations as well as protect the country from any potential cyber attacks.

Since the inception of Police Scotland, there has been a 47% increase in demand for digital forensic examinations as online crime becomes a larger issue in the country.

It is believed that a growing economy and a higher emphasis being placed on online equipment and technology such as tablets and mobile phones has led to an increase in the number of online crimes.

Deputy chief Constable Iain Livingstone said: "Very few investigations today do not have a digital aspect to them.

"The darker side of the web is all to evident for us to see on a daily basis, whether it relates to the sharing of illegal images of children, online grooming, radicalisation, orchestrating serious organised crime or cyber-bullying.

"The ease with which we can access the internet through various devices has become part of everyday life. Inevitably, criminals are also increasingly exploiting this.

"That means law enforcement has to be up to the task of preventing and detecting crime in the online and digital world. The creation of a new, modern facility brings together the expertise which exists in Police Scotland.”
