Scottish Rugby Star Guilty of Assault

Scottish International, Ryan Wilson, has been found guilty of assaulting two men in Glasgow’s West End.

The Glasgow Warriors flanker was fined £750 after he punched Glasgow Hawks captain Ally Maclay in a fast food restaurant. The nine-time capped internationalist also admitted to assaulting another man earlier that night by wrestling him to the ground.

Unprovoked

The attack, which occurred on a Halloween night out "appeared to be unprovoked" according to Sheriff Martin Jones QC, and was fuelled by alcohol. Wilson was found guilty of punching Mr Maclay, but not for kicking or stomping on the Hawks’ centre of which he was also initially charged.

SRU Suspension

Ryan Wilson has also been suspended from domestic rugby for three months without pay by the SRU as well as being banned from international duty until August. Despite his ban, Wilson may be able to feature in the Rugby World Cup later this year.

A disciplinary panel deemed that Wilson should attend a programme that would “support his personal development around the factors which contributed to the original conviction” as well as focus on the dangers of alcohol abuse.

A spokesman for the SRU said: “In accordance with Scottish Rugby’s standard disciplinary procedures Ryan Wilson has the right to appeal against the panel’s findings. Scottish Rugby will make no further comment at this time.”
