Tougher sentences for banned drivers

Longer jail sentences for drivers who cause death or serious injury on the roads when they've been banned from driving are to be introduced by the UK Government.

The Government intends to change the law so disqualified drivers will face up to ten years in prison if their actions result in a death, and up to four years imprisonment if they cause serious injuries.

The Justice Secretary also announced his intention to launch a full review of all driving offences and penalties, to ensure people who endanger lives and public safety are properly punished. This will include reviewing offences committed by uninsured and unlicensed drivers.

This review is due to be carried out over the next few months, says the Government, with the results to be published in due course.

The current maximum sentence faced by a driver who causes death while driving when disqualified is two years imprisonment, and there is no specific offence of causing serious injury by driving while disqualified.

The Government intends to make the necessary legislative changes to introduce the new sentences shortly, with the changes due to be implemented in early 2015.
