Uninsured and unlicensed drivers targeted

Nearly two hundred drivers were caught last week in a Police Scotland initiative targeting unlicensed and uninsured drivers. As part of the initiative, the police used powers under Section 165A of The Road Traffic Act 1988, which allows them to seize the vehicles of motorists caught driving without insurance or a licence.

“These owners have been deprived of the use of their vehicles and will have to pay a significant amount of money to have them returned, or they will be disposed of,” explained Inspector Ewan Innes, Head of Aberdeenshire and Moray Division Road Policing Unit.

A further 227 drivers were found to have contravened road traffic laws relating to the construction and use of their vehicle. Examples include a tractor driver with an insecure load and a Perthshire driver in a car that had a defective handbrake and exhaust, as well as tyres and wheels of different sizes.

"All of the drivers detected have been charged with road traffic offences and will now have to deal with the financial penalties imposed upon them and the points endorsed on their licences,” said Inspector Innes.

Any road traffic conviction has a big impact, but a conviction that results you losing your driving licence, could result in losing your livelihood too.
