FBO imposed after trouble in city bar

Earlier this month a man was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment and a two-year Football Banning Order at the Sheriff Court at Glasgow, after trouble flared at a city bar on Renfield Street where the England v Scotland football match was being televised.

Football Banning Orders (FBOs) were introduced in Scotland in 2006 and can be imposed by a court when a person is found guilty of an offence which is football related. An FBO can be made where the court is satisfied:

* That the person was aged 16 or over at the time of the offence,

* That the offence involved violence or disorder

* That the offence related to a football match and

* That there are reasonable grounds to believe that making the order will help prevent violence or disorder at or in connection with any football matches.

A person who has received an FBO is prohibited from attending football matches during the period for which the order is imposed.

In this case, a man called Christopher Bell was within Walkabout in Glasgow, watching the England v Scotland international friendly match in August this year. He apparently made loud and insulting remarks throughout the first half of the game and, after he had left the premises at half-time to smoke cigarettes, became involved in an altercation with staff.

Bell then became abusive, conducted himself in a threatening manner and challenged others to fight.

He was subsequently convicted of a contravention of Section 1(1) of the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.
