Police Scotland Investigating 134 Police Misconduct Probes

A report has revealed that Police Scotland are investigating 134 officers for alleged crimes and misconduct including sexual offences, stalking, theft, multiple assaults and some data protection breaches.

Of those under investigation three were of the rank of inspector or above with six Police Scotland members of staff also being investigated according to the report that was submitted to the Scottish Police Authority's Complaints and Conduct Committee.

Criminal Charges Involving Police Officers

Data shows that the number of officers under investigation under the Sexual Offences Act rose from four to six with eight officers also resigning as a result of their investigation. The figures show that one officer was also dismissed and another docked pay for neglect of duty, however, many investigations found that officers were often innocent.

Of the crimes that police officers breach of the Data Protection Act remains the most common type of criminal charge. However, this has dropped from 64 officers to 56. Assault remains the second most common criminal charge against officers but this too has dropped by seven incidents per annum.

22 officers are being investigated under the wide-ranging Criminal Justice and Licensing Act, 13 for perverting the course of justice, eight for discreditable conduct, six for neglect of duty, and six for theft.
