Scottish Drivers Committing More Than 40 Serious Offences Per Day

New figures reveal Scottish motorists are suspected of committing 40 or more serious road traffic offences each day.

The figures released under the Freedom of Information Act have shown drivers have been reported 60,000 times for serious driving offences  over the past four years.

Most of the reports related to careless or dangerous driving. However, more that a third involve driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Sir Stephen House, Police Scotland chief constable has made driving offences one of his main areas of concern. This is coupled with Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill’s proposal lower the drink-drive limit from 80mg/100ml down to 50mg.

Road Safety campaign group Brake however,  have argued that the proposals do not go far enough. The charity's deputy chief executive Julie Townsend said:

"We need the government to introduce a zero-tolerance drink-drive limit, rather than asking drivers to do the impossible and guess if they are safe to drive. It is frustrating to see too many drivers still selfishly risking lives by getting behind the wheel after drinking, even when the dangers and consequences are so well documented. The law needs to make it clear drinking any amount of alcohol makes you a danger at the wheel.”

Police Scotland massively outshot their quota for speeding tickets last year which has further highlighted the prevalence of dangerous driving. This has resulted in road safety groups urging police to focus their resources and attention on the most serious of road traffic crime.
