Drink Driving at Christmas

Police Scotland has launched a campaign in conjunction with the Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland to discourage people from driving over the festive period if they have consumed any alcohol at all.

The campaign will run throughout the festive season and emphasises the possible consequences for drivers of a drink driving conviction.

Police Scotland say that over 20,000 drivers are stopped by police every month. If a driver is breathalysed and found to be over the drink driving limit they will have committed a criminal offence and could face serious consequences.

A criminal conviction for drink driving will remain on an offender’s record for 20 years. It will also result in the automatic loss of their driving licence and the possibility of receiving a heavy fine.

It is not only in Scotland that campaigns are being run to stop drink driving, with TISPOL spearheading a Europe-wide campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of drink and drug driving throughout this week. Twenty-nine countries participated in a similar campaign last year, leading to 13,236 alcohol offences and 1,830 drug offences being reported, as well as the detection of over 2,500 other crimes.
