Small Decrease in Cost of Rural Crime

A recent report has shown that there has been a small decline in the cost of rural crime. However, some experts have stated that a decrease in cost may not reflect a drop in crime.

The figure, which came from a survey by an insurance company showed that the cost of criminal activity had fallen by £100,000 to £1.8 million. The survey praised initiatives to protect cattle, livestock and vehicles with numerous new safeguards in place.

Still Criminal Risk

However, despite the positives many were still profiting from the theft of all terrain vehicles and other such opportunities. As well as this, cybercrime proved to be a vastly growing area with the survey expressing concern about the rise in numbers. According to the report, cyber crime had risen to 63% with an increase in theft of solar panels.

Martin Malone, NFU Mutual manager for Scotland, who was also an author of the report said: "That there's been an overall decline in the cost of rural crime over the last 12 months is welcome news and reflects the huge efforts being made by communities and others to tackle this problem."

He also praised the efforts of systems and safeguards in place adding: "While today's survey contains some good news, it also highlights the need for rural communities to remain vigilant and put security at the forefront of their minds."
