Fife man sentenced for football related assault

A Fife man was recently sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court following his conviction for assault in October 2013.

He was given a Community Payback Order, with a condition to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and had a two year Football Banning Order imposed after pleading guilty to attacking a steward.

The assault occurred at the start of a Third Division match between Rangers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Ibrox Stadium in October 2012.

The man was observed to be unsteady on his feet and when approached was found to be intoxicated.

When the steward asked him to leave the stadium, he began to shout and swear at the steward and punched him on the face.

Assault is defined in Scots law as a physical attack on another which is intended to cause bodily injury or which puts the victim in a state of fear that he or she may be about to suffer bodily injury. In Scotland, an ‘assault’ cannot be committed by words alone, nor can it be committed by accident.

The consequences of a conviction for assault can be very serious. It’s important to take expert legal advice at every stage of the process from the moment you are arrested/detained, right through to trial.
