Dundee man’s car clamped for non-payment of fine

Last week a Dundee man became the first in the city to have his car clamped for non-payment of a fine, according to Scottish Court Services (SCS).

The man had been convicted of a driving offence and a fine was imposed by the city’s Justice of the Peace Court. He had failed to make the regular payments required and as a result his car was clamped. In order to recover his car he had to pay the original fine and also the clamping costs.

According to the SCS, if he had failed to make payment in full within 24 hours the car would have been placed in storage with further charges accruing on a daily basis. In the end the SCS has power to sell or scrap unclaimed cars.

The SCS is likely to clamp other vehicles over the coming months in the event that owners continue to default on the payment of fines.

As well as clamping motor vehicles the SCS can arrest wages, deduct sums from benefits and freeze bank accounts in order to enforce fine payment.
